That Your Kids will Actually Eat!
Medical Author: Melissa Conrad Stoppler, MD
Medical Editor: William C. Shiel, Jr, MD, FACP, FACR
Starting your kids off right by packing school lunches
with nutritious foods that taste good will help them establish healthy eating habits for life.
Instead of a sandwich on white bread, bag of chips, and cookies, try some of
the following healthy (and more interesting) items for your child's lunch
box:
Wraps made with whole wheat tortillas, containing
either lean cold cuts or lowfat cream cheese topped with veggie slices. Even the classic PB and J
(peanut butter & jelly) is healthier in a wheat wrap.
Single portion-sized cups of unsweetened apple sauce or fruit without
added sugar.
Trail mix made with cereals, nuts, pretzels, dried fruit or raisins, and
a few chocolate morsels.
Low fat cheese spread on whole wheat crackers.
Individual serving-sized packages of low fat yogurt, cottage cheese, or
yogurt smoothies.
Baby carrots, celery sticks, or apple slices with dips made from yogurt
or low fat sour cream.
Mini-burritos made with rice and black beans or refried beans in a
tortilla with tomato salsa. These can be heated or eaten cold.
Baked chips or pretzels are a better choice than high-fat potato ...

Lots of Tips for Heading Back!
The following health and safety tips are from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)
MAKING THE FIRST DAY EASIER
Remind your child that she is not the only student
who is a bit uneasy about the first day of school. Teachers know
that students are anxious and will make an extra effort to make
sure everyone feels as comfortable as possible.
Point out the positive aspects of starting school:
It will be fun. She'll see old friends and meet new ones. Refresh
her positive memories about previous years, when she may have
returned home after the first day with high spirits because she had a
good time.
Find another child in the neighborhood with whom your youngster can walk to school or ride with on the bus.
If you feel it is appropriate, drive your child (or walk with her) to school and pick her up on the first day.
BACKPACK SAFETY
Choose a backpack with wide, padded shoulder straps and a padded back.
Pack light. Organize the backpack to use all of
its compartments. Pack heavier items closest to the center of the
back. The backpack should never weigh more than 10 to 20 percent
of the your child’s ...

For Back to School
School is back in full swing, and for most kids that means completing
the dreaded homework assignments. Many parents battle with their
children to get their homework completed, but the battles can become
less severe, or eliminated completely if you start off the new school
year with a positive attitude concerning homework issues. Here is a Top
10 list of parent tips for reducing homework hassles.
Provide a quiet, well-lit "homework spot" –
Provide your child with a quiet place to do homework that’s free from
distractions, like TV, people coming and going, lots of noise, etc. Make
sure that your child knows this is his “homework spot,” and keep it stocked with the supplies needed, like paper, pens and pencils, a dictionary and thesaurus.
Schedule a regular time for completing homework –
Some kids handle homework better if they complete it right after school.
Some need a short break to refresh their minds. If your child does not
have an after school activity that day, it’s usually best to have
homework started either right after school, or after a healthy snack. If
a child waits until after dinner or right before bed to complete
homework, he will have to “restart” ...

For Back to School
BULLYING
Bullying is when one child picks on another child repeatedly.
Bullying can be physical, verbal, or social. It can happen at school,
on the playground, on the school bus, in the neighborhood, or over the
Internet.
When Your Child Is Bullied
Help your child learn how to respond by teaching your child how to:
1. Look the bully in the eye.
2. Stand tall and stay calm in a difficult situation.
3. Walk away.
Teach your child how to say in a firm voice.
1. "I don't like what you are doing."
2. "Please do NOT talk to me like that."
3. "Why would you say that?"
Teach your child when and how to ask for help.
Encourage your child to make friends with other children.
Support activities that interest your child.
Alert school officials to the problems and work with them on solutions.
Make sure an adult who knows about the bullying
can watch out for your child's safety and well-being when you
cannot be there.
When Your Child Is the Bully
Be sure your child knows that bullying is never OK.
Set firm and consistent limits on your child's aggressive behavior.
Be a positive role mode. Show ...
